The Gramophone Bench, designed by Hung Yuan Chang, is a remarkable piece of furniture that combines form and function in a playful and interactive way. Inspired by the phonograph, this bench encourages users to interact with each other and fosters a sense of togetherness. Its unique design features a higher middle section, which brings people sitting on it closer together spontaneously.
Unlike traditional benches, the Gramophone Bench offers users the freedom to choose their preferred position. Whether sitting or lying down, individuals can find their own comfort while engaging with others. This design also caters to families with children, as kids can play underneath the bench while adults enjoy their time on top.
The realization of the Gramophone Bench involved the use of ash wood and steam bending techniques. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each piece of wood was carefully bent to form the distinct shape of the bench. This process required precise calculations and craftsmanship, making it a true testament to the designer's skill and dedication.
With dimensions of 1420 mm x 720 mm x 600 mm, the Gramophone Bench is not only visually striking but also practical for various settings. Whether placed in a park, a museum, or a public space, it invites people to gather, relax, and engage in meaningful conversations.
Hung Yuan Chang embarked on the Gramophone Bench project in 2015 in Rochester, and it was completed in 2018 in Palo Alto. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to create a bench that embodies unique personality and encourages unrestricted interaction among users.
The design of the Gramophone Bench presented several challenges. Its shape, resembling two connected phonographs, required precise calculations and bending techniques to achieve the desired form. Overcoming these technical obstacles was crucial in bringing the designer's vision to life.
The Gramophone Bench is a testament to the power of design in fostering human connection. By drawing inspiration from the nostalgia of phonographs, Hung Yuan Chang has created a piece of furniture that not only serves its purpose but also brings people closer together. Its playful design and interactive nature make it a standout addition to any space.
